An indicator for the switch from derivative-free to derivative-based optimization
نویسندگان
چکیده
In some optimization problems found in applications, the derivatives of the objective function can be computed or approximated but at an expensive cost, and it is desirable to know when to use derivative-free methods (such as direct search, for instance) or derivativebased methods (such as gradient or quasi-Newton methods). Derivative-free methods may achieve a steady initial progress for some problems, but after some advance they may also become slower or even stagnate due to the lack of derivatives. It is thus of interest to provide a way to appropriately switch from a derivative-free method to a derivative-based one. In this paper we develop a family of indicators for such a switch based on the decrease properties of both classes of methods (typically used when deriving worst case complexity bounds).

In the study, novel and sensitive carbon paste electrodes (CPEs) developed for thepotentiometric measurement of Cr(III) and Mg(II) ions in pharmacological and water samples.CPEs as indicator electrodes were prepared from a mixture of four components, includinggraphite powder, paraffin oil, multi-walled carbon nanotubes (MWCNTs), and a greenionophore (Chitosan Schiff base...
متن کاملLocal Derivative Pattern with Smart Thresholding: Local Composition Derivative Pattern for Palmprint Matching
Palmprint recognition is a new biometrics system based on physiological characteristics of the palmprint, which includes rich, stable, and unique features such as lines, points, and texture. Texture is one of the most important features extracted from low resolution images. In this paper, a new local descriptor, Local Composition Derivative Pattern (LCDP) is proposed to extract smartly stronger...
متن کاملAn extension of stochastic differential models by using the Grunwald-Letnikov fractional derivative
Stochastic differential equations (SDEs) have been applied by engineers and economists because it can express the behavior of stochastic processes in compact expressions. In this paper, by using Grunwald-Letnikov fractional derivative, the stochastic differential model is improved. Two numerical examples are presented to show efficiency of the proposed model. A numerical optimization approach b...
متن کاملComparison of derivative-based methods by normalized standard deviation approach for edge detection of gravity anomalies
This paper describes the application of the so-called normalized standard deviation (NSTD) method to detect edges of gravity anomalies. Using derivative-based methods enhances the anomaly edges, leading to significant improvement of the interpretation of the geological features. There are many methods for enhancing the edges, most of which are high-pass filters based on the horizontal or vertic...
